How to Find Your Ideal Running Pace for Running a Marathon

Your perfect running pace is that zone where you feel like you could run forever. You need to be able to find this zone quickly if you want to run a marathon or half marathon.

Here are some tips for finding that perfect pace.

First of all you want to find a track or nice even road and warm up by jogging for 1 mile. Make sure you bring a stopwatch!

After your legs are warm, hit start on your stopwatch and run 1 mile (1600 meters). As you run pay attention to:

  • Your Breathing: You should be comfortably exchanging air -no huffing, puffing, or gasping. Experts say that you should be able to carry on light conversation without difficulty while running.
  • Your Running Form: Be sure to use correct form. Keep you head up and eyes looking straight ahead, arms comfortably swinging by sides, and legs in rhythm without over-striding.
  • Your Perceived Level of Difficulty (1-10): 10 being the hardest and 1 the easiest, you should be at a 7.
  • Your Heart Rate: 70-75% maximum heart rate (HR); find max HR by taking your age minus 220.

The time it takes you to complete a mile considering these factors is your average running pace. As you build your base and become a fitter runner, your pace will increase over time. Another way to increase your pace is to include speed work or tempo runs into your marathon training. With time and effort you can become a faster runner with increased endurance.

So zero in on your running pace and get in the zone.

How to select a good running pace for 1.5mile in 9mins.? (Answers: 3) (Comments: 0)
I can't seem to select a good running pace. At the gym, on a treadmill, I can run 1.5miles in 8mins 18seconds, but when I go outside it is 10mins. How do I know how to keep a good pace, but not a pace that will kill me after 1km. Any suggestions? Cheers.

How do I break a running pace of 11:30/mile? (Answers: 4) (Comments: 0)
I can run forever at 11:30/mile, but I want to run a better marathon time. Seems no matter what I do to try to better my mile time, I just get too winded and can't make it. Any ideas on how I can do this? I feel like I will be stuck at this pace forever!

How can I greatly improve my running pace/cardio capacity? (Answers: 2) (Comments: 0)
Hi all, I'm training to become a Marine Corps Officer, and through my NROTC/Marine Corps option program. I'm recommended to have strong physical strength and cardio, and I do, but running seems to be a drawback at the moment. Currently, I'm running 2 mi/12:30, and 3 mi/24 minutes, and I'd greatly like to improve these scores. Does anyone have any suggestions/tips to be a better runner and improve my running scores?

How can I improve my running pace? (Answers: 4) (Comments: 0)
I've been running for just shy of 2 months. The longer I run, the worse my pace. Lately I've been jogging at a pathetic 12.75 or so pace (that usually includes 2 minutes of walking/5 minutes of running for 29-30 minutes). I'm running outside so I am not running on flat land and I wonder if that is affecting my pace? It is so frustrating! I do cardio 3-4x a week, mixing running and time on the elliptical machine, but I am still just puttering along.
