Defensive Running, a Safety Running Advice

So you like to run? Run under the sun, rain, or snow. Run during the day or night. Run. No matter what time or day or season you decide to pump those calves and hamstrings of yours, there is no denying that running is one of those rituals that you cannot and will not give up.
I you bet you've had your fair share of scares on one or more occasions. Running during the day may well be perfect if you have the time and the energy to last through the day to get through your routine, so running at night becomes your alternative, and running on a machine just doesn't cut it. You're in for the whole experience, the concrete pavement, and the wind against your face, the stopover the last open convenience store. If you're this type of runner, as many of you are out there. Running may well be a well-prepared, choreographed part of your day.
A dog let loose may well be an avoidable experience at one point or another, or entire street of streetlamps bust out in the dark of night. Circumstances like these may (I hope to God not) come unprepared and caught you off-guard. There is a safety package prepared specifically for the runner like you in mind.
A canine pepper spray would do well when you encounter a dog in an un-"best friend"-ly manner, a LED safety light to illuminate you in a dark side street and a Hot Walker mace pepper spray for a human assailant. Perfect for warding off both animal and non-animal with animalistic behaviour. Gear up and suit up for the perfect package that may just save your life one day. If your jogging is probably too much to give up, then don't, instead, prepare and arm yourself with the best self-protection gear in the market.

Does anyone have running advice for beginners? (Answers: 13) (Comments: 0)
I want to try to improve my fitness by going running...but I'm pretty bad at it and I get out of breath easily. I know that ultimately practice is the only thing that will improve my stamina, but I want some ideas for how to start off so it's enjoyable...initially, how far/how long should I aim to run for? Thanks for any help :)

Running advice for a former smoker? (Answers: 3) (Comments: 0)
I quit smoking a week ago and have began running. I can run about a mile right now before being completely out of breath. I smoked for about 9 years, about 3 or 4 a day tops. Any advice on making this a little easier? My lungs are on fire after about a mile so far and my face has this weird numbness in it. My goal is to be able to run 6 miles by April or so.
