5k training tips and times?

I am 18 and the last time I ran a 5k was last year and I ran in 29min 15sec. I am planning on running one in may and was wondering what training program I should follow and if I've lost 15 lbs can I expect to cut off a lot of time from the last time I raced?

Spagett is a jerk. Low 18's for guys isn't very good, either, so he doesn't have much to brag about. You will definitely be faster after losing weight, just because you're lighter. The important thing is to ease into a training program so you don't get hurt. Don't jump into running everyday, it makes shin splints and tendonitis more likely. Start running only every couple days and then increase your mileage gradually until you are running most days a week. You can always stop to walk and then run again. Also running hills and changing up your pace will help you train, run hard between lightpoles or driveways and then run easy again. You can also stationary bike or swim also to avoid injury. Good luck! I bet you will be able to run under 25 minutes no problem by May if you train!

I ran cross-country and track for almost 10 years. I started off pretty slow but ran 18:52 5K in college.

Thanks so much! I am not training to join any team. Im just training to do this on my own and I'm glad you incorporated biking because I am training for a 180 mile bike trek in June so I have to continue to bike ride too. Thanks!!

Don't listen to spagett. 29 minutes is not terrible. I'm 17 and this is my first year running cross country and track and my best time for a 5k was 26:15. You're fine. =)
Running just 3 miles is not going to build up the endurance you need if you want to cut time. Try running around 5-10 miles. My coach trained us on once a week 6 or 7 mile runs that included hills. Also, try parking garages and any hill work you can get. It's a great free way to involve speed and hill work because they have inclines and stairs you can run. And run every day too. That's the most important thing to do. It might help running with a friend to help motivate you to run every day. (By the way, don't push it trying to be amazing in one day. Gradually work.)
Good luck and hope this helps!

hahaah spaghetti your an idiot. 29s for girls is just as bad as 18s for guys. nowhere near competitive. back to your question - yes dropping weight will help, but like a couple other ppl said, you need to build endurance. and alternate your days between hard and easy, so that you have time to rest your body. and dont feel bad id you want to take a day or two off here and there, it is actually encouraged. just remember to ease into training. or you will have injuries.

29 mins is pretty terrible. I run low 18s and im not even close to first place. losing 15 lbs will help but you gotta run everyday, some longer distances 7-10 miles to buld endurance, and also shorter distances to build your speed. if youre gonna weight train, keep your reps up towards 15 so you dont put on too much muscle which will increase your weight and make you slower. you can do ladders; half mile, mile, 2mile, 2 mile, mile, half mile, all at moderate intensity. join your high school track or cross country team.

well im a male and we generally run faster than females. but 26 is still pretty bad. i mean its not terrible, but its not competitive either. i dont know what your goals are. i guess what im saying is it could be worse, you could be obese and not able to run at all
