Sachin will have to play another 15 to 20 test matches (or roughly around 30 innings) to get to 15000 test runs & 50 test centuries.
Ponting need to play around 25 to 35 test matches to go past Sachin, if Sachin scores 15K runs & 50 hundreds

i am umesh
if we consider 1 century in each test then sachin will require just 7 test to get 50 centuries
and 15 k runs will complete by at least 20 more tests
i dont think ponting can suppress him - Sachin is on 43 centuries and 12700 runs needs 40 innings with average of 57 will take him there.That is 20 tests(2 years)
Punter is on 11300 with 37 centuries he needs 65 innings with average of 57 to reach there that is 32-35 tests(3-4 yrs).
Thus i feel ponting will never break sachins record.Bcoz Sachin will surely make 15k even more quickly than i calculated and punter will never play till 37-38 yr - Sachin will have to play another 20 test matches to get to 15000 test runs & 50 test centuries.
- Well that also depends on the nature of Wkts he plays on, its not that he cant score heavily in more challenging conditions but If they keep preparing dead wkts like ahmedabad then it shouldn't take too long I think may be 15 more tests. But India only play 4 more tests before the 2011 World Cup and Sachin will be 38 by then.

kashikooler979.brain - Another 30 tests perhaps. But Ponting will get there in 25 Tests because he has been scoring runs at double the rate of Sachin. Ponting's average in last 10 years is way above Sachin's. His career average is also much higher than Sachin.
- For achieving both the feats he will need 25 tests(12700 in 160matches , and 3-4 centuries per year) which means 2 yrs from now.
R.Ponting will need 1and half yrs more i.e(3 .5 yrs) to achieve both the feats( as the calculation goes)
and he has went on record saying that he will play till 38 yrs.
