How do I begin training my four week old puppy?

She is doing really well. She is a Shepherd and is going to be big I know and is a tiny little thing just now. So what is the best way to start the potty training? I have had experience housebreaking my dog I had before for 18 years but that was a while back and he was half trained when I got him. I got him from a friend that had to move and could not take him so he was already 6 months old. This little girl is tiny. Should I start with those pads I have seen? And there is one day a week when I cannot be here for very much at all. I have a daughter that will come and sit that day, have made arrangements already. So what advise should I give her? I am a new dad so any help is appreciated.

And to the kid that said she was gonna have mental problems...thanks a lot for that one. You know a good shrink since you have all this knowledge? Ya'll look. I tried to get the law to do something about this creep next to me. He has a female dog that he will not spay. He keeps the dog and when she gets pregnant, gives the puppies away. I saw him throwing one in the garbage a couple of days ago and went and got it out. I had a confrontation with the man when I called the cops later after someone told me here it was illegal for him to do that. End result, it was not illegal, his dog, his trash. I stole the dog from the trash!!! But I still have it and will go to court. I did slug the dude and will pay for it. Ya'll please don't be so mean. Help a dude out here.

Actually if you look at my two earlier questions, I have asked three, the first one was right after. I would not lie, don't do that. And the puppy was not four weeks but the vet said closer to three. I fed it and now have to go to court cause I have an assault charge. I did not know you guys could not see earlier questions and all. I am new here. I have had one dog before that lived to be 18 and to be honest, I am needing a lot of help and said I would come here cause people were so nice that first day. Those that first day helped me save the little girl's life. I am gald I did not come back and see the answers before that one that read my earlier question, but if you think I am lying go to the first question if you can. I was desperate that day. But I don't lie and that was a bit of an insult. I am sorry you deal with people who do. I don't. Where are those that helped before? I would have explained had I not known you could not see the earlier questions. I am not good on computers.

Oh Man, I have no trouble cleaning up. And my daughter wont either. I have been cleaning her little rump with a warm cotton ball as someone told me that the first question I asked. So I suppose I should just keep doing that a couple or three more weeks? She already thinks I am mama and I am a big dud...6'4" LOL... and got the muscle behind it too. But the little thing has tried to nurse on me. I sleep with her and I know that is not good but I fixed a place so I wont roll on her and I was told to keep her warm. The vet actually told me it was better for me to keep her since I had started than for him to try and put her there in one of those things they use. He said if he took her from me after the day I took care of her it could make it worse.

Already got the vets stuff scheduled. He gave me a book with these dates in it and said they would send me reminders. he took care of my dog I had for so long and was good. And I would never punish a dog for an accident. My main problem is my schedule and I am working that out. I jsut want to get the little girl to the age where I can take her with me and I know that will take time. I am a dog person so... After having the one for 18 years I could not leave this little thing to die.

AngelWolf...THANKS!!! And I am already calling her Angel cause she almost was one. My daughter said to keep it simple to two syllables. And as for expense...no problem but thanks. The only reason I could not get her to the vet that first day and the only reason I even saw what happened was the garage was picking my car up for a problem there and no one I knew was home. Most people I know work and travel so I just happened to be home that day. I have taken some days off just now, which is good I can do in my job. And money is not an issue. But I do thank you for the notes on that.

She may not learn anything at 4 weeks old. She shouldn't even be away from her mother until she's about 8 weeks. I'd give it a little time and when she's about 8 weeks I'd start trying to train her.

I had my toy poodle housebroken in 17 days. I'm not sure how smart a Shepherd is, but poodles are pretty smart. Here is what I did:

Take her outside every 1-2 hours. When you open the door to go out say "Outside. You have to go outside?" Keep saying "outside" then when you're out there say something like "Go pee pee" repetedly and if she went I'd say "Good girl. Peepee outside...good girl" and repeat it while you praise and pet her lovingly. If she poops I'd say "Good girl. Poopie outside...good girl." Repeat that too while you praise her.

Keep a constant eye on her in the house, I never crated her, but if she squatted to pee in the house I'd say, "No, Mollie." in a stern voice. Then I'd pick her up in the middle of it and take her to the door and say "outside" put her in the grass where you want her to go and say "Peepee outside. go peepee outside." Then when she finishes outside you praise heavily and say "good girl, peepee outside, good girl" Never scold, just praise. Keep doing that and the older she gets the more time you can put between walks, increasing by 1/2 hour increments.

As she got used to it I put a bell next to the door and when I brought her to the door I'd say, "You have to go outside" and I'd ring the bell and say "outside." Then I'll take her outside. I kept doing this for the last few weeks of training.

Believe it or not, she was fully trained in 17 days and she'll even run to the door and ring the bell and look at me. Then I'll say "you have to go outside?" and she'll wag her tail and run to the door and ring the bell again. I'll take her out and she'll do her business. I got her when she was 10 weeks old and she was completely trained by 13 weeks old and has no accidents in the house. She's 11 months old now and still no accidents.

Never use peepee pads or newspaper unless that's what she'll always be using because you'll only manage to confuse her when you change her routine to outdoors. You'll be teaching her to go to the bathroom in the house, then confuse her by telling her not to.

I work at home so I was home the whole time. If you'll be out of the house just have your daughter do the same thing that you're going to do and it should work like a charm. You should try this method. It's foolpoof. Good Luck!

You actually gave some good tips for when it is time and thanks for not judging. The rest of you too. I am glad to know people care but ya'll need to think about the dog when someone comes on here and not how bad the person is. Say what you have to say but HELP. I am not good at talking.

Tiny?? ah yeah thats because she is FAR TOO YOUNG to be with you. she needs to be with her mother and litter mates for another month at least. How on earth did you get your hands on a puppy so young? let alone illegal!!!

training I really think should be your last concern her mental and physical health is at risk being with you this young, she will NOT grow up to be a very stable dog, you are risking alot keeping her, take her back and pick her back up in a months time.

Don't worry about potty training her now, she is far too young to be able to control her bladder. She should only start being weaned at this age.
Puppies should not leave their mothers until 8 weeks.
But since you have her, I'd suggest using Puppy Milk Replacer (the powder stuff) to help feed her since she is still so young. However, you can start the weaning process.

    Good Luck!

how did you get a four week old puppy that puppy shouldn't leave its mother till at least 10 to 12 weeks old what you should do is take it back to it's mother or you are going to have a sick puppy and it may not even live very long.
the person that you got that puppy from should be turned in to the authorities, and have charges of animal abuse put against them.

Well first of all, a four week old puppy should be with it's mother at that age... I think it's too early to train. I started training my Westie at 3 months old, and she caught up in about a month At that age most puppy's just pee without thinking. But their pee is so tiny it won't be a big mess.

Sorry..you cannot begin to train a 4 week old puppy.
It is supposed to be with it's mother till she is 8 weeks old. Mother needs to be training her about dog stuff that no human can teach a puppy.
Of course she is tiny..she is new born.

a 4 week old puppy should be with its MOTHER. Its not old enough to start housetraining.. a pup that young has no bladder control. A pup that young would just be starting to wean.

I'm appalled that you have a 4-week old puppy. A pup should NEVER be removed from it's mother before 8 - 10 weeks. It needs the nutrients from it's mother's milk at leasst that long to get the antibodies it needs. Please get it back to it's mother for a few more weeks. You won't miss much on it's training. It's way to early to start training yet, anyway. Other than that, I don't feel it's appropriate for me to offer you any other advice, cause you're already doint it wrong by having it this soon. I hope it survives...bur... I have my doubts under the circumstances.

Have you read the wisdom of all the other answerers to this question? They are all in agreement, because THEY have a clue....?

You have to look at his earlier questions- he found the puppy in a garbage can.
    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

I hope this is true- and not just what you're saying to avoid flack about having a puppy this age.

    Anyway.
At 4 weeks, this puppy is not able to have any reliable bowel or bladder control. You can put pads out and start trying, but don't expect much success for a few weeks at least. The puppy is not old enough for vaccines, so you don't want to be taking her outside where she can be exposed to parvo. Generally puppies have control for 1 hour for every month of age , and add 1. So a an 8 week old puppy can "hold it" for 3 hours--tops. You'll probably have to be cleaning up for a while, but keep putting her on the pads & praise if she happens to go there anyway. Good luck.

dave, open up your e-mail option, I would like to talk to you. I have not answered your questions, but I have been fallowing them. this kind of story truly breaks me up.
I would like to e-mail you because it is more convenient and essayer then trying to find your Qs when they are posted, if you would prefer not opening your e-mail, then go to my profile and send me a message, I would love to help you.
    anyway, for this question.
you cannot really hope to train a 4 week old dog, their brains are not fully developed (their brains take about 6 weeks to fully develop, he just isn't ready yet.) if you tried to start now, you might risk damaging him, that is, her brain will not develop properly, I think we can both agree she has been through enough.
I think that your being home that day, your car being broke down, is just what that dog needed, to her, YOU are the angel, be proud of yourself!

4 weeks is NOT that big of a deal. GSD's are weaned between 4 and 5 weeks anyway...and should be separated from mom & littermates NO LATER THAN 6 WEEKS. There's not a whole lot you can do at this age as far as housebreaking. Feed 4 times a day at scheduled times, take her out immediately afterward, at 5 weeks she should be completely off any formula...and strictly on puppy kibble soaked in water. Start her shot schedule and worming as YOUR vet advises. Don't worry about crate training for at least another month. Be prepared to get up several times during the night for the first week. At 9-10 weeks, she'll be able to hold it almost all night. Keep her away from other dogs until she's had her shots.

Also, don't be concerned with people whining about her being away from mommie. If you've taken care of her nutritional needs, she'll be just fine. Behavior problems come from leaving litters together too LONG...not from separating them too early.

ADD: As far as the trash dumping...The guy should be neutered. Unfortunately, in most areas, nothing would happen to him.

Hi Dave, I read your earlier questions, I encourage others to do so. Bless you for trying to help this baby. You have received a lot of excellent advice. This is way too soon to even worry about that...her health is the main concern and her need for bonding. I wanted to add that many VETS will at least give free advice,or see you on a sliding fee scale. Let us know how she is doing each week. This is a learning opportunity for all. Do any members have suggestions regarding the issue of dumping the pup in the trash? With all of the animal rights groups out there you would think something could be done. Wishing you the Best! this puppy is too young to be potty trained. she's too young to be away from her mother yet. so that being said, the only thing you can do for the next four weeks till she gains bladder control is keep her in the kitchen. buy some baby gates and keep her in there so it's easier to clean up her messes. don't use pee pads. they will not work. they will confuse the dog into thinking she can pee inside. you can try to start potty training but remember that dogs don't gain bladder or sphincter control until at least 8 weeks old. there won't be any point in punishing her for peeing or pooping in the house when she simply can't hold it. you can start taking her outside to pee, but considering she'll need to pee every 30 minutes or less, you're not going to get it every time. just take her outside to show her where to go potty, but don't expect her to be trained for a while. and don't take her for walks or anything until she's had all her shots. and don't let her play with other dogs until she gets her shots either, as many dogs can carry diseases that your dog is not vaccinated against yet. you'll also need to deworm her at 6 and 8 weeks i think are the correct ages. talk to your vet about a vaccination and deworming schedule for your pup.

ADD: i didn't know your story. good for you for saving this puppy. :) she was lucky you found her.

Ok. Now I asked a question on here and got some decent answers and all of ya'll who answered this question without looking should be ashamed and come back to youanswer and apologize. MAN! I was going to tell you to just work with her after she gets a little older and worry more about keeping her inside right now. I saw your question and saw yur throat got jumped down and checked with my wife. SHe is smarter than me. And she said that puppies can be started at 4 weeks but with all you say this one has been through, I would just take her out every hour or so and worry more about getting some emat on her just now. Man you gotta big heart and I am a big guy too. I thik I'm going to the pound to get me a puppy. I think all breeders should just stop for awhile until the population control is better. That way all the pound pups can have a chance. You did a good thing bro And not but one person came back and said anything at all about the fact they read you wrong. And that one was not so bad to begin with. Dude. My wife wants your phone number! Hope you luck with that pup!
