Ha, I just got back from practice. XCountry is just running on trails and pre set routes that your coaches have scoped out. The routes are normally 1-5 miles. Some will have a loop or you do laps to gain extra miles.
Most races are 5k (3.2 miles) but almost all practices will cover more distance than that. A typical day for me is between 7 and 11 miles, plus some core conditioning. Don't worry about it to start. You go slower than in track, but you just keep on going, and going, and going.
As long as you have running shoes, you're set. Some people like to buy running shorts also. Most boys run without a shirt, and most girls run in a sports bra. Just get used to the distance, and that's all. Good luck, and have fun!
