How long after the runner started did the cyclist overtake the runner?

A long distance runner started a course running at an average speed of 6 mph. One and one-half hours later, a cyclist traveled the same course at an average speed of 12 mph.

The answer is 3 hours but how come?

set the distances traveled = to each other

d = st

6(1.5) +6t = 12t
t is time after 1.5 hours

9 = 6t
t = 1.5

total time is 1.5+1.5 = 3.0 hours
