I'm a beginner runner who runs at night at around 30-35 Fahrenheit....(clothing, running advice)?

So I'm 15 and just started to run. I might go out later tonight too (I live in NYC).

So basically here are the clothing that i wear.
T-shirt and a sweater or hoddie with a pair of sweatpants (50/50 cotton/polyester) and running shoes.

I run for about 1 hour each night for around 5 miles.

I'm running in prep for another sport (rowing), and also I don't want to spend money on fancy running clothing (UnderArmor tights etc.) Any advice on clothing? Am I wearing the right things?

Also, if i run 4x a week and 1 hour each night (around 5 miles), is that good enough cardio for the winter?

Layers are key because you'd be surprised at how warm you get in 30 - 40 degree weather. So what you are wearing is fine. You don't need all the fancy stuff, sweats & layered shirts are good enough. Make sure you keep your ears warm, you wouldn't want to get frost bite.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Make sure that you wear something reflective & maybe safety lights. Even though your in NYC, you'd be surprised at how a car can't see you till your on the hood... which is what you want to avoid. I've almost creamed more than my share of night runners in the city (chicago) & the ones that wear reflective gear & have blinking lights are the ones I see the best. There's probably tons of stores where you can get stuff like this cheap around your area. $10 - $20 should set you up, it doesn't have to be pretty, just effective.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Plus.... don't forget a whistle & pepper spray. There's plenty of freaks out there that have no problem attacking a runner... girl or boy. So run where there are more people & your not all alone... & always be aware of your surroundings. I know that your probably pretty wise to the nuts, but running at night does leave you a bit more vulnerable than normal. Bring your cell if you have one & ALWAYS let your folks know your route & when you will be back!!!!!!!!! & try to get a running buddy, not only does the run go faster... it's safer.

4x a week is pretty good. You might want to work on your upper body every other day to give your lower a rest & help bulk up for rowing. You'll need strength as well as endurance.

+ don't forget to eat a few carbs (hand full of something light) before & after. It will help your endurance during & you won't get weak after.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!

i am like you but ive been running now for about 4 years (20years old), tried speed sessions during hs track (4:28 mile pr) but hated it. i usually run three times a week 10miles each, always at night. I found that running 30-50 F is the best for any type run, however i prefer it to be sub zero, i do wear underarmour tights and mockneck. before i splurged on them i wore a long sleeve cotton tee with a sweat shirt over it/ i wore knee high socks, running shorts and sweat pants over all that (remember this is in sub zero with wind, i live in chicago). this along with gloves and a head band always kept me warm, if you have anything like sweatshirt material or fleece they keep you warm but only when there isnt wind. also, in my case i sweat when i wore them, that was the primary reason for the underarmour. as far as your concerned, you have the right clothing as long as it keeps you warm and comfirtable.

a little recomendation is to go to an outlet store like jcpenny, khols, value city, or any other store that has regular sales and only really sells clothing. they usually have brands like c9, athletec, and others that are athletic clothing, a pure polyester long sleeve tee under your sweats will wick away sweat and keep the wind bite away ( usually 5-15$) just always remember to wear GLOVES GLOVES AND MORE GLOVES.

sure, the clothing you discribed sounds great for that temperature, although a windbreaker might help when it gets windy in the city. when it gets hotter, dress less polyester blend shirt and shorts with supportive underwear (not boxers)

something with a reflector or light might help for crossing streets in the dark.

also although i know you aren't training to run, you might want to start going a little faster each day, and get to at least 6 miles for an hour, if you don't push yourself, you aren't going to get much stronger and your rowing won't improve as much. running with a friend/anyone will help push you to run harder. also you could join the track team next winter to keep in shape and gain core strength.

I live in Chicago so I would know... I wear tights and shorts and sweatpants, and the I on top I wear a thermal shirt and then a tshirt and a fleece. I would defiantly say tights and UnderArmor, and you can get the not real brands for cheap. Good Luck.
